International policy framework for conservation and breeding
There is a need to assess the impact of import/export on sustainable development of farm animal genetic re-sources. Developments in patenting in some countries have triggered discussions on the potential impact of intellectual property rights. Three important issues have to be discussed, i) requirements for a long-term suc-cess of breeding programmes, ii) needs to regulate exchange of genetic material and iii) how to balance differ-ent systems of rights. A Nordic working group on Legal framework for the rights to and exchange of ani-mal genetic resources focus on this, ahead of the First FAO Intergovernmental Technical Conference on AnGR in September 2007.
