The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair was born in 1922, 85 years ago. The event has evolved to become an ever better representation of the state of agriculture in Canada and a true showcase for our industry. The “Royal”, as it is commonly known, has become “The” place to be in early November and attracts massive and growing crowds of domestic and international visitors.
This amazing indoor agricultural exposition is home to the National Jersey Show in Canada readily recognized as one of the very best Jersey shows anywhere in the world. In 2006 the Jersey show was the largest rendition since 1999, seven years earlier. Prospects for the entire exciting package of Jersey events at this venerable and dynamic event at the 2007 show are among the best ever!
Jersey events kick-off on the evening of Thursday, November 8th at 5:00p.m. with the Sale of Stars Component Breeds Edition. Jersey sales have been hosted at the RAWF since November 1952. Therefore the 2007 sale will be the 56th Jersey sale at the Royal. The buzz is that a new record average will be set this year as the elite line-up is so extraordinary! The Semex Alliance have taken on the role of Manager for a third year. The select consignment of just under twenty Jersey lots includes a magnetic representation of the best of modern Jersey genetics-animals from the top of the breed’s index lists, the breed’s best known cow families, show winners at the most competitive shows and cutting edge, world-class genetics are the order of the day. The parents of the breed’s next generation will be offered by auctioneer Pierre Boulet and a top team of talented sales staff. See www.semex.com for the sale catalogue!
The very next day Friday November 9more glistening Jersey events will unfold. John Devries of Willdina Holsteins and Jerseys at Bowmanville, Ontario will officiate as Judge of the Royal International Jersey Futurity early on Friday afternoon. The Futurity class was born in November 1976 so this year will mark the 32nd presentation of this sparkling event for three year old Jerseys!
Right after the Futurity the open show classes of the National Jersey Show will commence. 2007 National Show Judge Callum McKinven of Lookout Holsteins and Jerseys, North Hatley, Quebec will begin his second Jersey judging assignment at the “Royal” on Friday afternoon. Callum first worked the ring at this show in 1998 and has been a consistent and highly successful exhibitor there himself. McKinven is a world-renowned dairy cattle, judge, breeder and manager and exhibitor.
The excitement continues late in the afternoon with the 25th Silver Anniversary edition of the Royal Junior Jersey showmanship classes.
Jersey Canada’s active Youth Committee is planning a special program in recognition of this milestone accomplishment! These classes have grown over the past quarter-century to the extent that two classes are now offered and that’s a great thing!
Next morning Judge McKinven will be back in centre ring sorting through an appealing cast of milking females on the way to naming a new national Champion around mid-day surrounded by her court of contenders. Many weeks in advance of the big show there is endless speculation about every one of the classes in the open show as contenders calve out and perhaps appear at fall shows. Soon after the conclusion of the National Jersey Show the Supreme Champion Dairy Female of the 2007 RAWF show will be selected with much fanfare!
Jersey Canada is receiving an unusually high number of expressions of interest in this grand finale to the Canadian show season from around the globe. The RAWF has developed an extensive suite of services to make a trip to the Royal an unforgettable (in a good way!) experience for international visitors including a special International Visitors Centre on the grounds. In addition Jersey Canada will have numbered editions of our brand
new true type Jersey model on hand for sale and collection at the show!
There is no doubt about it-YOU need to be in Toronto, Ontario from November 8 to 10 for a truly stunning Jersey celebration! Be there!
